Escribano, after waving a flag that says "Sánchez to prison": "Bullfighting is an art that must be above any ideology."

On Sunday in Huesca , Manuel Escribano waved a Spanish flag that caused controversy, as it read: "Pedro Sánchez to prison." Due to the uproar, the bullfighter issued a statement saying: "On my return to the ring at the bullfight held in Huesca yesterday, August 10, I wish to state my absolute and firm denial that there was any political intention on my part and that I was completely unaware that the flag bore that message.
During that moment, I received a Spanish flag from the supporters' clubs as a token of affection. I never read it or realized it carried any message. I took it solely because it was my country's flag, in a moment of emotion and gratitude toward the crowd, with no other purpose or meaning.
I also want to clarify that some reports claim I carried that flag around the ring, but that's not true. I only carried it for a few moments before leaving it, without walking around the square with it.
I firmly reject any attempt to link this gesture to political or ideological positions or to accuse me of wanting to carry and spread the message written on that flag. In my professional career and in my private life, I have never used my profession for political proselytizing or to disrespect anyone, regardless of their beliefs. Bullfighting, for me, is an art and a tradition that must rise above any ideological divide.
I regret that this moment of celebration and respect for the fans has been misinterpreted, and I trust that these words will clear up any doubts about my true intentions."
